Brief Anthropology is a scholarly discipline that studies human beings in all their diversity, and the ways in which they relate with the world around them. This includes the ways in which humans interact and relate with other humans, with objects and materials, spaces, animals, ideas, and other social forms such as religions, politics, globalisation, economic processes, social and cultural transformations and much more. Anthropologists are interested in the meaning-making that happens in and through those relations between humans and the worlds around them. We can call this meaning-making ‘culture’. Why is understanding culture important? It is not just important. It is vital. It is vital because the ways in which human beings make meaning (culture) around the world takes many diverse forms. Understanding these diverse forms allows us to think outside of the box and ask new kinds of questions about persistent social inequalities, and address inequalities and power struggles in socially responsible and culturally informed ways for people around the world. Making or Inspiring Change What is a persistent social issue you are concerned about? How do you think it should be addressed by decision makers, such as the city council, or the central government? What outcome do you want to see? How do you think your outcome should be realised? Who will benefit? Who won’t? You can write an essay, make a podcast, write a newspaper article, or get more innovative and create something entirely new with your hands! For example, the famous artist Grayson Perry created a series of vases that included commentary on Brexit and the referendum vote in Britain (see: https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-grayson-perrys-brexit-vases-acquired-victoria-albert-museum). Whatever you make, argue your case using real-world examples! The process: - Register your interest by 31st March 2024. Each student should register here to receive the resources and further information on the project.
- Submission of project – deadline 1st June 2024. Submissions will be reviewed by Dr Katherine Smith and Social Anthropology Student Ambassadors.
- Winners announced on 1st August 2024 and prizes sent out. For further information or if you have any questions, please contact Hannah Murphy at Hannah.murphy-2@manchester.ac.uk
