We’re excited that one of our Year in Industry placement companies, based in Manchester, has confirmed their requirement for the 2024/25 placement year intake! They are seeking ideally 3 school leavers to start their placement this summer 2024 for 12 months (so students will currently be in Year 13).
EDT Placements (The Year in Industry (YINI)), part of the Engineering Development Trust (EDT), is a not-for-profit organisation offering Pre-university/ post A-Level students a free extra resource when searching for year out, paid work placements. These placements give students the opportunity to check out STEM careers, make informed decisions about which study or career path to take and can lead to sponsorship or apprenticeship opportunities.
Candidates placed through the YINI scheme have access to additional mentor support, skills webinars (Master classes) and industrial accreditation. We work with partner companies all over the UK and have received the following opportunity:

DESCRIPTION OF ROLE:
As an operating technician your role is to support the manufacturing operators in specific duties during peak demand periods, follow manufacturing procedures as safely and efficiently as possible to fulfil production plans.
These entry level positions are ideal for someone who wants to explore a career in manufacturing but who has limited or perhaps no formal manufacturing qualifications or experience, for example candidates wanting to take a year out after completing school before going on to an apprenticeship or university. Ultimately you may wish to go onto university to study subjects such as engineering or materials science, or you may wish to stay with us or a similar company and pursue a career in manufacturing, operating more advanced equipment or progressing to team leader or production supervisor roles, perhaps via one of our apprenticeship schemes.
We are looking for candidates that are enthusiastic to work in manufacturing environment and keen to learn, we take pride in our core value of personal development and offer extensive training programs which include regular training events open to everyone onsite. Your Duties will initially be restricted to a small number of specific machines for which you will be fully trained and supported, including being assigned a mentor in addition to your line manager.
Main responsibilities:
· Operating process equipment and machinery to our Standard Operating Procedures, most likely in our rolling mills or billet preparation facility but may be extended to other areas of the magnesium production facility.
· Monitoring, recording process variables and adjusting process parameters to ensure specific equipment operates within key control parameters.
· Packing of finished goods into drums, bags & other forms of container for transportation.
· Communication to other operators and departments
· Updating log sheets and preparation and handover of plant status, which includes electronic reports.
· Take ownership and accountability for the safe production and housekeeping of the plant areas, this includes raising any hazards or issues you spot on our incident reporting system and any breakdowns in our agility system.
KEY COMPETENCIES:
Essential - The candidate must have this
· At least 5 GCSEs - A-C (4-9) or equivalent including Maths, English & Science
· Remained in full time education until 18, completing A-Levels, BTEC or equivalent qualification in any subject.
· No direct experience necessary, but must be passionate about wanting to work in manufacturing.
· Must have ability to use own initiative, prioritise tasks and work well under pressure.
· Good communication and organisational skills.
· Comfortable using IT systems e.g. Microsoft office platforms, email etc.
· Enthusiastic to work in a manufacturing environment.
· Keen to learn and develop self.
· Self-motivated with ability to use own initiative.
· Attention to detail.
· Professional approach to work.
· Team player who demonstrates a high level of commitment, adopts a flexible and positive approach.
· Ability to stay focused throughout an 8-hour hands-on shift
Desirable - It would be beneficial for the candidate to have this list (but not essential).
· Studied a relevant subject post GCSE e.g. science, maths, IT, engineering subjects at A-Level or BTEC
· Any manufacturing or engineering experience would be an advantage
· A UK driving licence and own transport would be an advantage as the site can be difficult to access via public transport, but in addition this opens up opportunity to potentially train and gain your Fork-Lift Truck licence while with us.
· GCSE or A-Levels in IT would be an advantage as you will be trained how to use our various business systems including reporting any engineering breakdowns on our Agility CMMS system and recording production transactions on our SAP system.
