Laing O'Rourke are an international engineering and construction company delivering state-of-the-art infrastructure and buildings projects for clients in the UK, Middle East and Australia.

Construction and the Green Economy is a fast growing and exciting gateway with over 95,000 people employed in Greater Manchester currently!

In our low carbon and net zero sector, there are more than 3,000 firms employing nearly 60,000 people. (and worth nearly £9 billion a year!). This will need to keep increasing to support our goal of being a net zero city-region by 2038!

Investment into construction skills is at a pivotal moment – nationally a £100m programme is being rolled out to train 40,000 construction workers, supporting delivery of 1.5 million homes and vital infrastructure across the country by 2029.

In Greater Manchester, investment into skills in construction is central to our Good Growth plans to create a thriving city region, aligning technical education with housing, regeneration and our growing sectors.

A major step in building the skilled workforce required to deliver thousands of new homes across the city region is the launch of the North West Construction Technical Excellence College (CTEC) at Wigan & Leigh College - one of just 10 colleges nationally to be awarded the status by the Department for Education, offering every young person access to high-quality and modern construction training.

We visited the CTEC with Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, why not check it out.
